People ask their doctors and therapists how to lose weight or get healthier. What others do, they want to know, to stay disease free. Many physicians' and dieticians' answers have almost always been the same - "everything in moderation". They say to live life every day and don't bother to think about whatever you are eating if it is in moderation. They treat weight and health issues with food like a common cold, not like a threatening illness. Yes, it is good to have a positive attitude like this and leave the rest for divine intervention but not when it comes to food because you are what you eat.
Everything in moderation will work for those who are put on this planet with extraordinary disease-fighting ability and such people are rare to find. So the advice "you can eat anything you want as long as it is in moderation" is good to be listened to, not for practical use. Someone once said that everyone has at least one food that they are allergic to or should avoid at all cost. People should have control over what they eat. They can and must take charge. No one has a greater stake in your health than you do. The truth is, moderation only works for very few people. Others who have tried it countless time will know by now that it is a lame diet advice to give to anyone out there. For those who are suffering from autoimmune diseases, this moderation idea is bad for achieving optimal health. Certain foods are inflammatory for some people which means they need to stop eating foods like wheat and dairy to get back their health on track. Eating these foods even in small quantity can cause adverse reactions in them.
Together as physician and patient, you may have to look at treatments to cure advanced disease through proper food choices. Many foods may worsen quality of life and people need to understand this reality. In fact for some types of conditions, the track record with only selected food is positive and holds potential for cure as well. The same is true for weight loss. The more limited your food choices are, the more likely you are to lose fat and overall weight. It is a balancing act. You can't live like there is no tomorrow because that day is coming. But you can prepare for tomorrow by making smart food choices and it is never late to do that.
Eating in moderation is also a terrible idea for people allergic to certain foods. If you are allergic to peanuts, eating only a bite can prove fatal. Other foods that people are allergic to can cause skin breakouts, mood swings, resurgence of pain, sleep disorders and GI distress even with moderate indulgence. The very concept of moderation is intangible as well as meaningless in such cases. What people eat is the most powerful predictor of living healthy at any age. Eat something that you really enjoy and you will probably live long enough to see a few more generations. Foods matter. People eating wrong food, die, on average, 10 years younger than people who have eaten only selected foods. So for the vast majority of folks, it is a wake up call to ditch the concept of moderation. It is time to enjoy eating only the right food and eliminate the unhealthy ones. Everyone has food types that they like and that give them energy. Eat these foods on a daily basis to improve health and metabolism. In essence, avoiding 'moderation eating' concept will transform you.
