For many, the day often begins with a workout. Engaging in a workout not only keeps you fit and trim, it is also a motivating factor in eating the right kinds of foods and boosts your mental state. Certain foods make your workout productive and energizing.
However, there are certain foods you should not eat before a workout such as last night’s leftovers such as pasta, French fries or other fatty foods like doughnuts. Deep fried snacks will slow you down and add the kind of calories that are not good for your heart or stomach. In addition, fatty foods often cause bloating and no one, absolutely no one, wants bloating when they are trying to exercise.
Another food that you shouldn’t eat is high-protein shakes and bars. Sure they taste good and have few calories but they often omit sufficient carbohydrates and that can lower your energy. In addition, stay away from veggie salads. This can cause gas and can hinder certain activities like running or biking. Veggie salads are also harder to digest and provide little substance for energy.
It is also important to stay away from fruit juices with a high sugar count and gels. They, too, can cause diarrhea and an upset stomach. They give a quick boost but they will not give you sustainable energy. Many like drinking soda and other carbonated drinks but they also cause bloating and gas. And, with the extra sugar in them, they can cause problems with your stomach.
Many like snacking on flax seeds but even though they are healthy to eat, they are high in fiber and will cause bloating and gas during your workout. Flax seeds are healthy but should only be eaten after exercising. Bananas are often eaten as a snack before a workout but if you do eat one before you exercise, choose one that is yellow and ripe. Green bananas are high in starch and therefore, more difficult to digest. Dairy foods taste great but should not be eating before exercising. They, too, can make you feel more sluggish and sleepy during a workout.
Even though the above foods should not be eaten before a workout, there are foods you can eat such as oatmeal. Oats have a lot of fiber which releases carbohydrates into your bloodstream. This gives you a boost before you exercise. Greek yogurt is another food you can eat before a workout. It is easy on the stomach and for added flavor, add some fruit or honey.
How about a cup of coffee or expresso? Caffeine can help with a workout by generating more energy. It also slows down fatigue and burns up fat. Another food you can eat before a workout are smoothies. They work well before a workout because they are easily digested and give you a steady release of energy as you work out. Whole grain bread, trail mix, carrots and chocolate milk, also can be eaten before a workout.
To conclude, there are certain foods that should not be eaten before a workout such as last night's leftovers like pizza or high protein shakes and bars. Instead, have a bowl of oatmeal with fruit or yogurt.
