If people would just stop throwing away those tasty broccoli stalks! Did you know that you can put them to good use in your kitchen? Why not make a tasty soup from broccoli stalks or use them in a stir-fry? Here are some creative (and delicious!) uses for broccoli stalks so you won’t ever have to toss them away again!
A lot of folks throw away broccoli stalks when cooking. This is where we’d like to shout out “Hold it!” because there’s really no need for it. Rather than treating broccoli stalks like yet another kitchen waste, let us look at the many good uses for broccoli stalks here in this post.
If you look at your "typical" broccoli you see, that they look like a small tree. When we say stalk, we obviously mean the thick trunk of this little broccoli tree that most of us are cutting away when we prepare foods. This stalk has a harder outer layer, its “bark” if you will. If you remove this hard layer with a peeler, there is a much softer and tender section inside.
Now, when cooking, there is really no reason to dispose of the whole stalk since you can just peel them and use the softer inner parts like you do with the other parts of the broccoli. But aside from simply peeling the stalks and using them in your cooking, there are some other good uses for the broccoli stalks.
For a tasty vegetable broth, the hard, outer parts of the broccoli stalks are perfect. So if you peeled them as described above, you can keep the peels and store them in the fridge for when you’re making a delicious vegetable broth.
You can treat broccoli stalks the same way as carrots or green peppers. Simply toss them into soups, add them to pastas or stir-fries. Since the broccoli stalks have a very mild taste, you can’t really ruin your food with “too much broccoli" flavour. If you want, you can also cut them up in smaller pieces and roast them. This makes a great side dish!
Chop up the broccoli stalks and cook them together with broth and some other veggies. Add some onion and garlic for taste. When done, use a hand blender to purée the mix. This makes a fantastic broccoli soup. If you want it a tad creamier, just add some cream for an awesome cream of broccoli soup!
Your dog will love the broccoli stalk bits, since they are chewy, almost like a raw-hide bone! Just don’t overdo it with them, use the broccoli stalks as an occasional dog treat only, since you sure don't want to upset your dog’s stomach. Those who may have chickens or goats in their backyard can also use the stalks as a feed. The same applies here, don’t make the broccoli their only food and they will love them!
Cut the broccoli stalks into very small chunks or slice them into thin discs. You can now sauté them with a stir-fry or add them to your frittata or casserole before you put it in the oven.
