Scarfing down a mountain of unhealthy food at a party might feel good in the moment, but it certainly won't the morning after. Although this might be the case at many parties, it doesn't have to be at yours. Consider these top 5 healthy snack options when planning your next party.
The word “party” is often associated with all kinds of debauchery and unhealthy behaviour, yet it doesn’t have to be this way. Many of us often assume that in order to have a good time and be social, we must sacrifice some element of our health or consume a certain substance in order to get in the right mood or fit in. The truth is, partying can be kept entirely healthy whilst still being extremely fun and social.
One aspect of parties that are often unnecessarily unhealthy are the food options. Sure, sometimes it’s great to just sit back and indulge in something that tastes sensational, but this does little for our long-term health goals. However, there are plenty of healthier options available that still tick all the flavour boxes. These snacks will stimulate the tastebuds, while packing a nutritional punch that will allow all of your guests to wake up the next morning without guilt. Instead, they will feel energised and light as opposed to heavy and sluggish.
Here are a few ideas for healthy snacks to throw down at your next get-together.
Fries are one of the tastiest and most filling snack options. Everything from the flavour to the texture is simply satisfying. With that said, most fries are loaded with salt and unhealthy fats; and while they may taste great, it’s not the most nutritious option to choose. This is where sweet potato fries step in; they are delicious, sweet, bright orange, and highly nutritious. To make these beauties, peel some sweet potatoes and cut them up into the shapes of fries using a good kitchen knife.
Next, place them into a bowl and cover them lightly in either olive or coconut oil. Sprinkle in the seasoning of your choice (Moroccan or Italian spice blends always go down well). Now that you have seasoned your sweet potatoes to perfection, mix everything together with clean hands. Spread the fries out over a piece of baking paper on a baking tray and place them in the oven. Bake at 232°C until they are fully cooked and display a golden brown colour.
These little delights are an excellent way to make consuming salad a lot more appetising and exciting. Frisco is basically what Italians call the wafer-like consistency of cheese after it has been adequately baked or fried. A Frisco cup is when a cup/bowl-like structure is made from baked cheese and filled with a variety of herbs and vegetables.
To make a Frisco cup, grate parmesan cheese in multiple, small piles spaced a few centimetres apart on a sheet of baking paper. Bake the cheese at 190°C for around 6 minutes until it is just melted. Use a spatula to transfer the cheese into a muffin pan and allow it to cool. This procedure will form the shape of the cup. Now it’s time to get creative. Add a combination of vegetables, cheese, and seasonings into the cups and top with oil, salt, and pepper.
This quick and easy snack will impress guests due to its unique visual appearance. Place garlic, tomatoes, and scallions into a food processor and pulse until the contents are transformed into a thick pulp. Add vinegar, salt, and pepper. Now, take your cucumbers and cut them into approximately 3-5cm long cylinders. Use a melon-baller to make small indentations into each piece. Place the mixture into the cups and your nutritious treats are ready.
These bites will taste mesmerising, and also provide the nutritious benefits of folate, potassium, and vitamin C.
Guests will certainly be excited to try this option. Begin by peeling a zucchini into wide slices. Spread a tablespoon of cream cheese on the surface of one side of each slice. Next, thinly cut the most delicious vegetables you can think of (such as radishes, carrots, or even bell peppers) and place them vertically onto one end of the slice. Now, tightly roll up the slice in a sushi style, allowing the cream cheese to seal the roll closed.
Bruschetta is a stunning appetiser at any party. Take a baguette (or something similar) and cut it into medium-thick slices. Grill the bread on both sides until it becomes hard and crusty. Next, take a piece of garlic and rub it against the surface of each slice of bread, allowing the bread to absorb the flavour.
Next, chop up tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and garlic into small piles and place them together into a bowl. Drizzle them in olive oil and mix together. Place a good amount of this mix onto the top of each portion of bread, then drizzle with balsamic vinegar.
