Contrary to popular belief, the direction that your health will turn in life isn't simply based on the fact that the genes that you have inherited from your parents is hard wired into your system, dictating how you will handle stress, how long you will live and how healthy you will be during the course of your life.
New research has demonstrated that regardless of the fact that your family is susceptible to certain types of illnesses or certain types of stressful scenarios, you can still have control over your life.
A perfect example of how you can train your body to ward off illnesses was recently demonstrated in a PNAS study. In the study, researchers ran an experiment to see if the human body can be trained to ward of illnesses. They trained one control group to perform breathing and meditation practices and in another control group they gave them no training whatsoever. Later on in the study, the researchers injected a bacteria that is known to cause flu-like symptoms in the control group who were trained to perform breathing and meditation techniques on a regular basis and the control group who did not receive any training.
The results were astonishing; what they came to the conclusion with is that the control group that were trained to perform breathing and meditation practices, had less flu-like symptoms that the control group that didn't. What this meant was that you can train your body to ward off illnesses. So in theory what this means is that regardless of the fact that your family may have a specific gene that makes you more susceptible to a certain type of illness, you don't have to necessarily acquire that specific illness as long as you take the necessary steps needed to ensure that you stay in optimum health.
Anxiety and depression are illnesses that are considered to be hereditary. Chances are, if your parents had problems dealing with stress, you may have a hard time dealing with it as well. But various researches have been demonstrating that this too can be controlled by taking the necessary steps to reduce stress.
While it's understood that by taking medication, you can temporarily ward off the symptoms associated with anxiety and depression, various research studies have been demonstrating that stress can controlled naturally without the use of harmful medications by taking the necessary steps to reduce stress. Back in 2011 a study was conducted in to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture when it came to reducing stress and anxiety. The purpose of the study was to determine if acupuncture had an effect on the blood levels of the protein Neuropeptide Y (NPY).
This is a protein that gets secreted by the sympathetic nervous system in humans that is responsible for activating the fight or flight mechanism which induces stress and anxiety. At the end of their study, they came to the conclusion that rats that received acupuncture treatment had low levels of Neuropeptide Y, which meant that during a stressful situation the rats would feel less anxious and more capable of bearing with stress. They also found that rats that did not receive acupuncture treatment during the study and were exposed to a stressful situation, had high levels of Neuropeptide Y and thus, were more than likely to feel an elevated level of stress and anxiety when faced with a stressful situation.
What these two studies demonstrate is that you can train your body to control factors that were previously thought to be uncontrollable. Regardless of the fact that your family may be prone to acquiring a specific type of illness or fall into the midst of depression and anxiety, by training your body to withstand these debilitating scenarios, you can control your health and the direction it will take in life. Just because it runs it the family, it doesn't mean that it has to dictate your well being.
