One of the conditions that you can have is being lactose intolerant. Lactose is a sugar that is found in milk. When you drink or eat something that contains lactose, you will feel severe stomach pains. You might even vomit or have diarrhea. You may feel like you are dying, but you should not worry as people don't die from being lactose intolerant. You will find a way to have a comfortable life while having lactose intolerant.
If you live in the United States and have lactose intolerance, you are fortunate to have a lactose-free milk called Lactaid. The bad part is that Lactaid milk tastes terrible. You can enjoy it with cereal and other things. By itself, it does not taste good and it is hoped that the makers of this milk can create this milk with a better taste.
Another thing about being lactose intolerant is that it is a matter of trial and error to determine what foods that you can or cannot eat or drink. The problem is that just because some food or drink has lactose, this does not mean that you cannot eat or drink it. Food or drinks may just have a little lactose and you will be able to eat or drink it without any problems. You will just have to try food or drinks that most likely contains lactose and see what happens. Fortunately, you will be able to tell if you can tolerate it within 30 minutes to two hours. The intolerance of lactose will likely become apparent by two hours.
With pure milk, you should feel the intolerance quite quickly. Within a few minutes, your stomach will make clear signals that it does not like the amount of lactose in pure milk.
You will probably have to find substitutes for your favorite lactose foods. As said above, you can still drink milk as long as it is a lactose-free milk. If you like them, you can also drink milks like almond, rice or soy. There is also cheese that has less lactose than the normal cheese.
Most foods that are full of lactose are dairy foods. You will feel that you will have to stop eating or drinking all dairy foods or drink. The problem is that dairy foods are one of the best sources of calcium. When you eliminate calcium from your diet, you could end in the long run having osteoporosis, a sever weakening of the bones. Calcium keeps your bones strong so the total elimination of calcium from your diet is not the way to go.
Being lactose intolerant should not mean that you miss out on the advantages of calcium and vitamin D. Lactose-free foods can still give you these nutrients like lactose-free milk and cheese. Almond, oat, rice and soy milks can still give the calcium and vitamin D. Being lactose intolerant does not mean the end of getting calcium into your diet.
Before you buy a food or drink, you should examine it to see if you can get the same amount of calcium that you would get if you drank cow's milk. You can fill any gaps in calcium by taking calcium pills. This should ensure that you will never lack the important nutrient of calcium.
