You may know one of those folks who can just eat everything and they never gain any weight. But you will need to change into a size up just from looking at the chocolate in your cupboard—how unfair! What’s more, it may also take you longer to lose weight than others. Learn why not everybody loses the same amount of weight during a juice fast.
Not everyone loses the same amount of weight during a cleanse. Whether you want to shed some kilos with a juice fast, with exercise, or with other healthy chances to your lifestyle, your weight loss journey is bound to be different from a friend or family member’s. Why is your friend losing weight in no time just by cutting out soda, when you may be having a much harder time slimming down even though you’re juicing and working really hard to reach your goals? The simple answer to this is that every body is different. Let us explore the reasons why weight loss during a juice cleanse varies from person to person.
The main reason we all lose weight at a different rate is because of how our body’s metabolism works. To shed some light, it will help to have a better understanding of what metabolism is and how exactly it affects weight loss.
Your metabolism encompasses all the biological processes that your body uses to convert food into energy. Said differently, it is all the energy (calories) that you burn every day.
But this burning of calories doesn’t just happen when we exercise. It happens all the time no matter what we do—even when we’re sleeping. The rate at which we burn calories is called metabolic rate.
Metabolic rate varies depending on our activity level. For example, when we’re exercising, our metabolic rate is high and we burn more calories as a result. There is also what is called basal metabolic rate (BMR), which stays steady, but can depend on several factors such as your age, current weight, and muscle mass. The BMR essentially indicates the number of calories you burn if you stayed in bed all day. Your total metabolism or metabolic rate is the combination of your BMR and other things, such as diet and exercise.
You may have heard how some people have a slow metabolism and others have a fast one. Yes, we’re talking about those fortunate folks who seem to never gain weight, no matter what they eat, while you might be taking on kilos just from looking at a candy bar in the wrong way. Simply spoken, everyone’s metabolic rate is different. What are these factors that affect our metabolism?
Unfortunately (or fortunately, if you’re among the lucky ones), genetics are a main factor that decides how fast your body burns energy. In other words, you may simply be born with a slower or faster metabolism. Research has found that there are 20 major genes and several hundred minor ones that play a role in how we gain and lose weight. So unless we’re talking about the future where we might at some point be able to change our genetic makeup like in science fiction movies, there is really not much we can do.
2. Body composition
People with a muscular body and less body fat normally have a faster metabolic rate. This is because the same amount of muscle tissue requires about 3 times the energy of that which is burned by fat tissue. Since men are normally more muscular than women, this is also why the metabolic rate of men is somewhat higher than women. Likewise, tall people normally also have a higher metabolic rate than shorter people, since they have more muscle mass.
As mentioned, men are normally more muscular than women, which is the reason they burn calories faster. So even at the same weight and body height, the metabolic rate of women is normally 5–10% lower than that of men.
4. Current weight
Your current body weight is the biggest factor that determines how many calories you burn per day. The more body mass you have and the larger you are, the higher your metabolism. Now, the key to losing weight is that you need to consume fewer calories per day than what your body is burning. But know that this doesn’t mean a person who doesn’t weigh much can easily cut out calories if they want to lose weight. Just the opposite! A larger person who is burning much more calories per day than someone who only weighs 75kg can cut more daily calories and actually lose weight faster in the process.
Older people burn fewer calories than younger people. This is because as we age, we normally also lose muscle mass and are less active. And this is why older people need fewer calories. So, if you’re planning a weight loss regimen or juice fast, you should always take your age into account as well.
6. Lifestyle habits and activity level
Many things in our life affect how many calories we burn daily. Some people may spend most of their time sitting in front of a computer playing games or watching TV, so they burn much less energy than people with a more active lifestyle. But besides our general activity level, there are other things that influence how many calories we burn. For example, if someone smokes, it can increase their metabolic rate. If you drink coffee or other beverages that contain caffeine, it will also up your metabolic rate to some degree.
7. Sleeping habits
You may think that sleeping less would give you more time and therefore more energy for your daily tasks, but exactly the opposite is true. If you sleep less than the recommended 7–8 hours per night, your metabolism will actually slow down. But it’s not only how many hours of sleep you’re getting per night that can affect your metabolic rate. If you only get poor sleep and you don’t wake up rested because of it, this can also slow your weight loss progress. This is also the reason people who suffer from sleep apnoea, where they frequently wake up during the night, often also have problems with their weight. So, if you want to speed up your metabolic rate so that you can lose weight faster, one thing you should do is prioritise getting plenty of restful sleep.
8. Hormonal health
Your hormones play a big role in many different physiological processes, including how fast you can lose weight. Women in particular can experience hormonal changes that affect their weight loss rates. It is quite common for women who undergo perimenopause or menopause to also gain some weight as a result of these hormonal changes. Some people may also have medical conditions such as thyroid problems that can cause abnormal hormone levels, which can cause excess weight gain and difficulties losing it as a result.
Obviously, you can’t change all the factors that influence how much weight you will lose during a juice fast. For example, you can’t change your age. Nevertheless, there are many things that you can do to increase how many calories you burn!
Exercising is obviously one of the most effective things that you can do to burn more calories. But no worries, you don’t need to go all out with strenuous exercise if you want to lose weight. It is long known that even slight exercise such as walking can greatly benefit weight loss, as long as you do it regularly. Just 20 minutes of daily walking or stretching and even doing work around your home can make a big difference. The key is that you remain active so that your body burns more calories during your normal day.
2. Build muscle mass
Exercising and being active will make you burn more calories, but so will working on building muscle. Strength training exercises improve your body composition and build more muscle mass. And when your body is more muscular, as previously mentioned, it will burn more calories even when you’re resting.
3. Eat the proper amount of calories
It’s not exactly a secret that the amount of calories you consume plays a big role in weight loss. If you eat more than what you’re burning, you are gaining weight. Check. But this doesn’t mean that an extreme diet with just a few calories is best. In fact, if you’re not getting enough calories, it can actually slow down your metabolism. You need to make sure that you eat the right amount of calories: not so much that you’re gaining weight, but also enough so that you can keep your metabolism going at a healthy rate.
