Oranges are probably one of the most popular fruit of this day and age. They can be found being enjoyed the world over, and produce one of the most commonly seen fruit juices - a juice that is often associated with healthy living and as part of a balanced breakfast. It is no surprise really, oranges are easy to grow, offer a burst of energy and are full of nutrients – not to mention they are delicious!

The orange, or more specifically, the sweet orange (which is more often used for consumption), is a citrus fruit belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is actually a hybrid of other citrus fruits, namely the pomelo and the mandarin. The typical orange you may pick up in the supermarket will be round of shape, orange in color, and have a finely textured skin. Like most citrus fruit, the juicy flesh contained within is segmented.

Oranges are thought to have originated form Asia, spanning the region from southern China all the way to Indonesia where they have been cultivated for thousands of years. From this part of Asia, the orange spread to India, and then later, the Middle East in the 9th Century, (although Oranges were present earlier in the Middle East through trade). It wasn’t until the 15th Century that the orange spread to Europe, but ever since its arrival it has done nothing but increase in popularity.
